One of the wonderful things about the Prinect Production Manager subscription is that Heidelberg provides more than just a workflow that processes jobs, outputs proofs/plates and gives you Push to Stop. That alone is a lot compared to other workflows, but Production Manager does even more. We also provide a suite of plug-ins for Adobe Acrobat called PDF Toolbox. I have covered 3 of the tools already in my previous blogs.

Coating Editor
Basic Trapping Tutorial and Advanced Trapping Tutorial
PDF Toolbox-Geometry Control

In this blog I would like to look at the tool Object Editor. In this day and age, a lot of work is supplied as Acrobat PDF format. I am dating myself, but I go back to a time before PDF when everything was output to postscript.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostScript

I assure you, though, that I am still quite young. For much of the file processing and with many output systems you could not see any result until your output was complete. Some companies, including Heidelberg, created proprietary formats that postscript would be ripped or rendered to. Different software would output postscript based on the programmer’s interpretation of postscript. This meant that the same artwork laid out exactly the same in 2 different applications, would produce a different postscript code and therefore a possible different result on output. Adobe PDF addresses this by standardizing or “normalizing” postscript by creating a standard output if going directly to PDF. You can then see what was created. The most brilliant part, which we take a bit for granted today, is that it looks the same on any platform. PDF has solved many issues we used to face – all you receive is a PDF. No need for supporting images or fonts. Just a nice tidy package.

Sometimes changes or corrections need to be made to the supplied artwork. These can be done by our tool Object Editor. It can be accessed in Acrobat on either a PC or a MAC under Plugins-PDF Toolbox-Object Editor.

In this area you can customize the Tools column like I have. There Prinect PDF Toolbox can be added.

All the tools are then available this way as well.

When we look at the tool itself it is broken into 3 tabs. Color/Overprint, Geometry and Text.

When a page element is selected and we right-click on the mouse we are given some options as well.

An interesting function that can be used is we can select everything on a page with similar attributes. This makes it very easy to target, for example, all of the page elements with the same color if a change needs to be made to everything with that color.

Object Editor has many practical features. After I have selected a page element. Under Color/Overprint I can see what color it is and whether it is overprinting or not. These attributes can be edited. A stroke or margin can be added. The overprint can be modified or just checked to see its current state.

If we select type we can also see what makes up the type and we can even select all of the type with the same attributes and even by the font size.

Jumping to the Text Tab we can see and edit even more information about the type. We can even convert this type to a graphic or outline. This changes the type from being type into a piece of vector artwork. Note that this reduces the editability of the pdf, since the line of type can no longer be retyped to say something else. Many people use this for just this purpose, so that it cannot be altered.

The Geometry tab lets me do things like move objects around the page with x and y coordinates. I can scale and even rotate page elements.

A very interesting feature of Object Editor is this little button right here.

This button will take everything you have selected on a page and make a new pdf with just those objects. This is great if you need to repurpose the artwork.

Super convenient and one of those nice little touches the programmers at Heidelberg have put into this workflow. Prinect Production Manager is filled with these thoughtful and helpful features. No need to pay for third party pdf editing software either, everything that you need is included in order to produce your work.
