What’s the Heartbeat of Your Print Shop? The answer might surprise you.
Often when I ask customers, “what’s the heartbeat of your shop?”, 9 out of 10 say their press. “If my press isn’t running, then I’m not producing sellable sheets!”
While this is certainly a fair observation, let’s look at it a different way:
When evaluating their use and how they affect the entire print process, from start to finish, cutters are a very critical piece of a shop’s productivity. Cutters are a necessary part of the printing process both before and after sheets are run through the press:
Parent sheets are cut to facilitate offset, digital and other workflows
Finished printed material must be cut for final products or further production processes
Further cutting may be necessary for final finishing
Without a cutter, work cannot be started, produced or finished — most businesses would cease to produce a final product and the ability to bill for the work they have produced.
And yet, while cutters play such an essential role in the overall operations of a printing business, it is often one of the last pieces of equipment that printers choose to upgrade. So, how is your “heart beat”? Is it beating strongly, or has it become less steady with age? Are you worried about looming “health” problems?
While essential operations have remained the same, cutting productivity has come a long way in recent years – from stored job recall to efficiency boosting peripherals, including the newest AirGoJog, which completely automates the loading and jogging process.
As with people, you’re only as fast as your slowest team member. It all starts with the heartbeat of your shop.
