For any print shop worried about their environmental impact, it is extremely important to reduce and avoid CO2 emissions. Based on current scientific knowledge, the emission of greenhouse gases is the main responsibility for climate change — carbon dioxide is the most relevant greenhouse gas.
Heidelberg is the first company in the printing industry to take action to reduce the ecological footprint of their presses. Since drupa 2012, our customers have had the option of CO2 neutral Heidelberg equipment in prepress, press, and postpress. This has been completed by partnering with TU Darmstadt (Darmstadt University of Technology), who has created a method that precisely calculates the CO2 footprint of not only the production of Heidelberg equipment, but also of the suppliers. These calculations were certified by Fraunhofer Institut UMSICHT.
Customers who choose to purchase a CO2 neutral press receive it with a “CO2 neutral” label right beside the Heidelberg logo. This shows the ecological commitment of the print shops and sets them apart.
Only a few customers have taken advantage of this option for their press, but for print shops like Rondo-Pak, it is crucial for them to have machinery that doesn’t harm the environment. Rondo-Pak of Camden, New Jersey, invested in this order to fulfill their mission statement — to be a dedicated steward of the environment and aware that carbon balancing is crucial to preserve the climate. This technology has allowed them to be set apart and make a difference in the environment.
